Knowledge Base Article #229:

How do I verify which edition/version of SQL Server I am running?

It is common that when an attempt is made to upgrade a SQL Server installation from the MSDE (desktop) edition to a full SQL Server 2000 (standard or enterprise) edition, the server will remain in the MSDE edition without the user's knowledge.   Any time such an upgrade is performed, we recommend verifying that the edition has been changed from Desktop to Standard or Enterprise.  To do so, please copy the attached script and run it in WinSQL.

If you expect the edition to be Standard or Enterprise but see Desktop instead, you will need to follow the procedures in the knowledge base article "How do I upgrade my SQL Server from MSDE (Desktop) to Standard or Enterprise Edition?" (KB article #230).
